Welcome to Our World

Close to top safari destinations with stunning views of Mount Kenya from 15 acres of peaceful, private gardens – lions, elephants, rhino (all the wildlife!) within easy striking distance. An interior designed, stunning colonial house with the best chef and wonderful house staff! Prepare to be pampered..!

The space

Ol Bobongi House is a 15-acre property which comprises one main house, one games/gymnasium complex, one host cottage and a staff cottage. The entire property is surrounded by electric fence and we have 24-hour gate and security service. This is a peaceful place though and our fence is more to keep our dog in and the wildlife out!

We can accommodate up to 10 people in our sumptuous interior designed home. Ol Bobongi House has 4 bedrooms – 3 of them are en suite (all large; one with a Super-king Bed, one with a King-sized Bed and one with twin beds) and the 4th bedroom is a mezzanine room over the games room, with 2 queen size beds with a fully equipped bathroom close by. All bedrooms in the Main House lead onto huge verandas facing Mount Kenya and looking out over the Bush towards the Aberdares. The verandas are a wonderful place to relax, especially in the evening for your ‘Sundowner’ – the tradition of sipping on your gin and tonic whilst the huge African sun slips behind the horizon.

For those of you who love star-gazing, there is no ambient light here and the views of the Milky Way are without parallel.

We also have a large fully-equipped kitchen, a dog room / boot room, a cinema, a dining room and a very large drawing room with stone French fireplace.

The home is further complimented by study area, cloakroom (loo), a large entrance hall with fountain and pond, a further study, a shower room and the “piece de resistance” is the huge games room. Here we have a bar, a snooker table, table tennis, Foosball table, darts, a big fireplace with comfy sofas and a gymnasium. This is the most fantastic entertainment room and if you have kids / teenagers a brilliant place for them to hang out. This room leads onto an outdoor courtyard area, with a boules / Petanque court and a barbecue area. We usually have lunch here! (Breakfast is in another gazebo in the garden facing Mount Kenya and we have tea on the veranda and dinner / supper in the dining room!) In total, the main house runs to over 800m2 or 8000 square feet…. there is lots of space and the entire main house is available for your use!

We grow most of our own vegetables and herbs in the garden and we have free range chickens; so we can offer you lovely fresh produce on your table everyday.

Our home is a project of love and attention to detail – with an African theme (skins and furs) mixed with French chic and artefacts from Asia. It is an oasis of calm in which to unwind and have the holiday / stay of a lifetime…

Ol Bobongi does not rent room by room as our guests have exclusive access to the whole property irrespective whether you are two guests or ten.

Location

Situated to the North West of Mount Kenya, the Laikipia plateau is one of Africa’s most exciting and exclusive wilderness safari destinations – combining abundant wildlife, spectacular scenery, extraordinary cultural and bio-diversity, some of East Africa’s most successful nature and game conservancies – and a complete absence of package tourism.

The ‘Laikipia experience’ comes largely free of the constraints that often apply in Kenya’s national parks and reserves. Activities such as night game drives, nature walks, bike tours, horse-riding and camel treks – prohibited in most parks – are just some the exhilarating pursuits on hand in the extensive private reserves and game conservancies that make up much of the region.

Lolldaiga Hills

Laikipia hosts a wealth and diversity of wildlife – second only to the Masai Mara in Kenya. It has significant populations of predators and also the “Big Five”, with over 50% of Kenya’s black and white rhinos, thousands of elephants, about 25% of the world’s Grevy Zebras, and an increasing population of rare Wild Dogs. The region is home to more endangered species than anywhere else in East Africa.

Laikipia Rhinos

From Nanyuki and its environs there are numerous excursions , game drives and cultural visits that can be organised to neighbouring reserves, safari lodges and private ranches – such as Lolldaiga Hills Ranch, Ol Pejeta Conservancy, Solio Ranch and Mount Kenya National Park. Riding, climbing, trekking, flying, white-water rafting, fly-fishing, polo, golf, mountaineering and many other sports and activities are also available close by. For more information on the flora and fauna and conservation of the region please visit the website of the Laikipia Wildlife Forum www.laikipia.org.

Nanyuki

The gateway to Laikipia and Kenya’s northern territories, the busy market town of Nanyuki was founded in 1907 and still retains a distinctly old-fashioned charm.  Dominated by the peaks of Mount Kenya, Nanyuki sits at 1,950 metres above sea level – making it one of the 15 highest towns in Africa – and the Equator runs across the main road just to the South of the town.

Nanyuki Equator

These days Nanyuki is home to the Kenyan Air Force and to the British Army in Kenya, and there are several good places to visit, shop and eat in the town – including the Lily Pond Arts Centre, Le Rustique and Cape Chestnut. At Nanyuki Airport you will find the popular Barney’s restaurant and just across the road One Stop Nanyuki has a café and excellent delicatessen. In the centre of town you will find a branch of Nakumatt , a Dormans Café and a Blue Rhino gift shop.
